Back On The Job
by Mary Drake Korsmeyer
Sabbatical leaves are for teachers, right? Yes, but Peacock Keller is one of the very few law firms in the United States making such a leave available to lawyers as well. I took a sabbatical during six months of 2004.
Now back at my desk at 70 East Beau Street, I am refreshed and rededicated to the practice of law and meeting the needs of our clients.
Each year our firm will provide a leave for up to six months to a partner. The remaining attorneys take on the extra work for clients. It is an opportunity to introduce to our clients the skills and competence of the rest of our firm. And it is also an opportunity for the one who is on leave to rest, recharge and renew by being relieved of work duties and court schedules. There are no requirements imposed to study or work during this time.
From May through October 2004 I had this delicious opportunity after 24 years at Peacock Keller. I greeted each day with enthusiasm as a new gift.
So what did I do? I traveled extensively with my husband Jerry. A cruise to Venice and the Greek Isles. My Cornell University reunion in June. In July we went to the North Carolina beach with dear friends. Then in August to California where older son David and grandchildren live, and on to Hawaii to meet a new baby grandson, courtesy of son Keith.
In between we had special visits with daughter, Carol and family in Pittsburgh.
Yes, I did get a good start in cleaning out the garage and closets in our Peters Township home where we have lived for 30 years. Of course, that's an ongoing process that will never be complete.
I read some good books, too; both serious and fun. But by the time November 1 came around I was glad to retum to my law practice and see my co-workers and clients. I missed them! And I am fortunate to have such a congenial place to retum to with challenging work to be accomplished. I am, indeed, relaxed, refreshed and renewed and look forward to seeing you!
Editor's Note: Kenneth L. Baker will be taking his sabbatical from May I to October 31, 2005.
