Four Rules of Highway Accidents

If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, there are four important steps that should be taken either immediately at the scene, or promptly thereafter:
  1. Contact the police. The law requires it, and you may very well benefit from it.

  2. Exchange driver's license, registration, and insurance information. The law requires you to be carrying these things, and they should be readily available.

  3. Collect the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any witnesses. Particularly, this includes pedestrians, or other drivers who stopped to help, but it can also include passengers in the vehicles involved in the accident.

  4. Contact your insurance company. In order to protect yourself, you need to assure that your insurance company has prompt notice of the accident.
EDITOR'S NOTE: In the next issue of Peacock Tales, we'll expand on the "how" and "why" for those four simple rules.
